<enttypd>The polygons represent the counties (or county equivalents) within the United States. The primary legal divisions of most states are termed counties. In Louisiana, these divisions are known as parishes. In Alaska, which has no counties, the equivalent entities are the organized boroughs, city and boroughs, municipalities, and census areas. In the states Maryland, Missouri, Nevada, and Virginia, there are one or more incorporated places that are independent of any county organization and, thus, constitute primary divisions of their states. These incorporated places are known as independent cities and are treated as equivalent entities for purposes of data presentation. The District of Columbia has no primary divisions, and is considered an equivalent entity for purposes of data presentation in decennial censuses. All of the counties in Connecticut and Rhode Island and nine counties in Massachusetts were dissolved as functioning governmental entities; however, the U.S. Census Bureau continues to present data for these historical entities in order to provide comparable geographic units at the county level of the geographic hierarchy for these states and represents them as nonfunctioning legal entities in data products.</enttypd>

<stepDesc>The following steps were performed by Esri: Downloaded Census TIGER/Line Geodatabases 2020 from the U.S. Census Bureau and extracted the counties dataset. Clipped to the shoreline using Census TIGER/Line Hydrography Geodatabases 2020 and NOAA National Shoreline datasets. Projected the dataset to World Geodetic System 1984 (WGS84). Added the fields STATE_NAME and STATE_ABBR from Census TIGER/Line Geodatabases 2020. Added the fields STATE_FIPS and COUNTY_FIPS and created their values from parsing the values of the FIPS source field. Added the field POPULATION (alias POPULATION_2020) from Esri and U.S. Census Bureau: 2020 (Public Law 94-171). Added the field SQMI and calculated its values projected to North America Albers Equal Area Conic. Added and calculated the field POP_SQMI (alias POP20_SQMI). Reordered, renamed, and removed fields.</stepDesc>
