Comments: Dams and road and railroad crossings were assessed to determine whether they are barriers for northern pike and similar fish species and how much potential spawning habitat they blocked. Other problems with road crossings, such as erosion and disturbance to stream channels were not assessed. Barriers were then ranked by the cost per acre of habitat that would be reconnected by removal or reconstruction. Crossings with the least cost per acre are ranked highest. Some ranked projects include two or more barriers that have cumulative effects, and must be addressed as a group to achieve the estimated habitat gain. These grouped barriers display an asterisk after their rank to alert users to look for associated barriers with the same rank. Black dots classified as “Unknown” may or may not be barriers—survey staff were unable to access these sites.
Subject: Road crossings, dams, and other structures can act as barriers to fish migration, which may reduce access to spawning habitat. Northern pike in Green Bay spawn in tributary streams and wetlands, so their population declines are likely related to loss
